You Are Here: History - What Is So Great About Luna Porcelain

So what’s so great about Luna Porcelain?

Well, it’s design and quality.  Recently we were approached by the French Musée National de Céramique in Sèvres and the Musée National de la Porcelaine in Limoges to stock some of our products.  What an achievement especially as we are already in the Louvre in Paris.  Visitors now have to decide which is the more beautiful, Luna porcelain or the Mona Lisa.  Tough choice.

We are delighted to be in such prestigious shops especially as everyone knows that our French friends are not that keen to acknowledge the excellence of anything that isn’t French!

Unique natural designs

Our beautiful porcelain products are designed by Lynne Lange who has been designing fine porcelain for over 20 years.  Many of the designs take their inspiration from natural forms such as sea urchins, shells and flowers.

Superlative quality

All our products are made in Dehua which is located in central Fujian province in China.  The quality of the porcelain from this area is especially fine as it produces a particularly white lustrous finish and is often called Chinese White or Marco Polo porcelain.  Fine porcelain has been made in Dehua since the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and saw a boom in popularity during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Among Dehua porcelains the exquisite white figures of the Buddha were the most famous, representing the most skilled firing technique of the Dehua Kiln at the time.  This superb white porcelain from Dehua soon became the most recognisable and valued of all Chinese porcelains throughout the world.

The porcelain makers of Denhua are versatile, flexible and very responsive to market demand.  For hundreds of years they had built up their unrivalled reputation for figures of the Buddha but when Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution swept through China in the late 1960s they moved seamlessly to making equally fine figures of the Great Helmsman himself.  Now that a really customer led business!

We are proud to be part of this fine tradition and to have our products made by the descendents of the craftsmen who made the fabulous porcelain vases of the Ming period.
